Tasmanian Visitor Survey and International Visitor Survey released today confirm our tourism industry continues to grow at a sustainable rate across every region of the State, Premier Will Hodgman said.

“Government’s strategy is to encourage our visitors to stay longer, see more of our State, and spend more while they are here. These results show our Plan is working.”

“In the year ending September 2018, Tasmania welcomed 1.3 Million visitors who spent a record $2.4 Billion in our communities, up 4 % from previous year.”

“Total number of holidaymakers has grown by 2 % and they are staying longer with holiday nights up 8 % from the previous 12-month period to 5.87 Million nights.” Premier Will Hodgman said.

Figures also show 69 % of all visitor nights were spent outside of the capital. All regions experiencing steady visitor growth with the Cradle Coast region showing the strongest rate increase up 5 % from the previous period.

Latest International Visitor Survey shows Tasmania welcomed 307,000 international visitors during the year ending September 2018, up 15 % from 266,500 the previous year. Expenditure by international visitors increased by 13 % to $547 Million.

Tourism is one of Tasmania’s great competitive strengths, supports over 38,000 jobs in every corner of the State and is a major reason why our economy is the fastest growing in the nation.

“Now is not the time to put a handbrake on our tourism industry which is a major job creator and contributor to Tasmania’s economic revival.” Premier Will Hodgman said.
