Tasmania is home to people from all faiths, cultures and backgrounds. There is absolutely no place in our community for the hatred and intolerance that has bred this barbaric act of terrorism and we condemn it in the strongest possible terms.

On behalf of all Tasmanians, the Government extends its deepest condolences to those who have lost loved-ones in yesterday’s senseless attack on people who were only peacefully participating in religious observance, Premier Will Hodgman said.

Tasmanians well understand how difficult it is for the people of Christchurch and New Zealand at this time, and our thoughts and prayers are with them.

“I, and the Minister for Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management have received briefings on the situation and Tasmania stands ready to provide any assistance to New Zealand should it be required.” Premier Hodgman said.

Tasmania Police are also reaching out to our local Muslim community to support them and reassure them of their safety.

All flags on Tasmanian Government buildings will be flown at half-mast as a sign of respect for the victims of this wicked terrorist act.
