A Victorian Liberal Nationals Coalition Government will provide an additional $2 Million over four years to help Victoria’s elite athletes reach their maximum potential.

Shadow Minister for Sport and Recreation Hugh Delahunty said a Coalition Government would help boost the state’s competitiveness by making it easier for our elite athletes to travel for National and International Competitions.

“Under a Coalition Government, athletes – no matter where they live – will be able to access financial assistance if they need to travel extensively to train and compete.” Mr. Delahunty said.

“Elite and developing athletes will be eligible for grants of up to $2000 a year to help subsidise the cost of travel and accommodation.”

“The grants will be open not just for Olympic Sports like Tennis, Cycling and Swimming, but also for Sports such as Waterskiing and Women’s Cricket which typically struggle for funding and recognition.”

Mr. Delahunty said the funding would be in addition to VicTalent Grants available for grassroots Sporting and Recreational Organisations in Regional and Rural Victoria.

“Many of our elite athletes are trying to balance their sporting careers with school, university or full-time work.” Mr. Delahunty said.

“These grants will remove some of the obstacles facing our high-achieving athletes to ensure they can focus on representing and promoting our State.”

“Victoria has a great reputation for major sporting events and we want to ensure that our state’s athletes are well represented in National and International Teams.”

“We are committed to supporting Victoria’s athletes – from local clubs at a Grassroots Level to those competing on the International Stage.” Mr. Delahunty said.
