Dwelling Approvals Rise in October 2010

ABS Building Approvals show that the total number of dwellings approved rose 9.3% in October 2010, after falling for six consecutive months in seasonally adjusted terms.
According to the ABS, New South Wales (14.0%), Victoria (4.6%), South Australia (6.1%) and Western Australia (2.3%) recorded more dwelling approvals this month while Queensland reported fewer dwelling approvals (-0.7%) in seasonally adjusted terms.
Private sector houses approved rose 1.5% with rises in New South Wales (3.5%), Victoria (3.1%) and Western Australia (2.4%), while Queensland (-8.1%) and South Australia (-2.1%) fell.
The value of total building approved rose 4.1% in October in seasonally adjusted terms. The value of total residential building rose by 8.2% while non-residential building fell by -3.8%.

Dwelling Approvals Continue to Fall in September 2010

ABS Building Approvals show that the total number of dwellings approved fell 6.6% in September 2010 and are now showing falls for six months, in seasonally adjusted terms.
According to the ABS, Tasmania recorded a rise in dwelling approvals (1.0%) this month, while New South Wales (-1.5%), Victoria (-10.0%), Queensland (-2.3%), South Australia (-24.9%) and Western Australia (-2.0%) all fell, in seasonally adjusted terms.
Private sector houses approved fell 2.2% with falls in Victoria (-3.6%) and Western Australia (-10.7%), while New South Wales (8.1%), Queensland (0.5%) and South Australia (0.4%) rose.
The value of total building approved fell 3.2% in September in seasonally adjusted terms. The value of total residential building fell by 4.5% while non-residential building fell by 0.7% following a rise last month.

Number of Dwelling Units Approved Fell -4.7% in August 2010

ABS Building Approvals show that the total number of dwellings approved fell in August 2010, seasonally adjusted, following a rise in the previous month.
According to the ABS, Queensland (0.9%), South Australia (11.2%) and Western Australia (0.9%) recorded more dwelling approvals this month, while New South Wales (-16.0%), Victoria (-1.4%) and Tasmania (-10.5%) recorded less dwelling approvals in seasonally adjusted terms.
Private sector houses approved fell -4.3% due to falls in New South Wales (-7.5%), Victoria (-7.7%), Queensland (-7.0%) while South Australia (3.6%) and Western Australia (12.3%) rose.
The value of total building approved fell -4.2% in August in seasonally adjusted terms. The value of total residential building fell by -7.8% while non-residential building rose by 3.1%.

Approved dwellings fell 3.3% in June 2010

ABS Building Approvals show that the total number of dwellings approved fell in June 2010, and has fallen for three months in seasonally adjusted terms.
According to the ABS, New South Wales (-6.2%), Queensland (-8.1%) and South Australia (-25.4%) recorded less dwelling approvals this month, while Victoria (1.4%), Western Australia (1.4%) and Tasmania (21.3%) recorded more dwelling approvals.
Private sector houses approved fell 2.5% due to falls in Victoria (-5.4%), Queensland (-8.9%) and South Australia (-4.0%). New South Wales (0.9%) and Western Australia (5.9%) rose.
The value of total building approved fell 2.4% in June in seasonally adjusted terms. The value of total residential fell by 5.5% while non-residential rose by 4.4%.

Significant revisions to the number of dwellings approved for Western Australia and Victoria are the result of the inclusion of previously unreported data. Identified processing errors also resulted in revisions to Queensland data.
DATA NOTES
The trend estimates should be interpreted with caution as the underlying behaviour of building approvals may be affected by initiatives within the Government stimulus package, which included the “Building the Education Revolution” (BER) program and the Social Housing Initiative as well as other developments associated with global economic conditions. From June 2009 to February 2010 BER impacts were quantified and removed from the trend estimates because of its short term nature. From March 2010 these impacts are no longer removed from the trend estimates as their effect has significantly declined.

Dwelling approvals continue to fall in May

ABS Building Approvals show that the total number of dwellings approved fell in May 2010 and has fallen for two months in seasonally adjusted terms. This month’s fall was due to an 18.8% Decrease in Private Sector Dwellings approved.
According to the ABS, New South Wales (-9.8%), Victoria (-3.0%), Queensland (-8.6%), Western Australia (-13.9%) and Tasmania (-24.8%) recorded less dwelling approvals this month, while South Australia recorded 30.6% more dwelling approvals.
Private sector houses approved rose 1.7% due to a large increase in Victoria (14.5%). Whereas New South Wales (-1.2%), Queensland (-8.2%), South Australia (-0.3%) and Western Australia (-3.6%) fell.
The value of total building approved rose 2.7% in May in seasonally adjusted terms. The value of total residential rose by 0.1% and non-residential rose by 9.1%.

Number of Private Sector Houses Approved Down This Month

ABS Building Approvals show that the total number of dwellings approved has levelled off in April 2010 following 14 consecutive months of increases in trend terms. This was due to a 1.9% decrease in total houses approved being balanced by an increase of 3.4% for other dwelling approvals.
The decrease in total houses was driven by a 2.0% decrease in private sector houses. Victoria (-4.1%) showed the largest percentage fall in private sector houses followed by New South Wales (-1.8%) and Queensland (-1.5%).
The increase in other dwellings was primarily due to an increase of 5.0% for private sector other dwellings. Western Australia (9.5%) showed the largest percentage increase in private sector other dwellings followed by New South Wales (6.2%) and Victoria (5.6%).
The value of total building approved fell 1.0% in April in trend terms. The value of total residential rose by 0.7% while non-residential fell by 4.5%.
