Welcoming Visitors To The Western Wilds

Western Wilds drive will get visitors off the beaten track and out exploring Tasmania’s fascinating and spectacular west.

Western Wilds project is part of the Government’s Tasmanian Journeys project, which included a $500,000 commitment to commence the journey.

People all over Tasmania are benefiting from Tasmania’s growing visitor economy and the State Government will continue our plan to not only increase the number of visitors, but for them to stay longer, see more of our state and spend more while they are here.

“We are strongly committed to supporting sustainable tourism that showcases what makes our State special, including our incomparable, captivating regions.” Premier Will Hodgman said.

Building on the success of The Great Eastern Drive, which has seen a 20 % increase in visitors to Tasmania’s East Coast since its development, the Western Wilds is a second iconic drive to be enjoyed by locals and our visitors.

State Government has worked with the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania, Destination Southern Tasmania and the Cradle Coast Authority to develop the Western Wilds journey.

Journey has been designed to better engage touring visitors in the many different experiences and destinations on their journey as they travel through western Tasmania, and to experience one of the most diverse, historic, spectacular, challenging yet rewarding drive journeys anywhere in Australia.

Western Wilds journey will feature story stops developed by local tourism operators as well as artworks commissioned by the Government which will explore aspects of Indigenous culture, the mining industry, the Thylacine and the development of the state’s renewable energy scheme.

“It’s about supporting tourism businesses not just on the West Coast, but on the way there. The jobs created by tourism businesses in regional areas show why a growing visitor economy is so important to Tasmania.” Premier Hodgman said.

Tasmanian Government has committed an additional $1.4 Million over 3 years to deliver 3 new journeys, including a Northern Journey, a Southern Journey, and a North-West Journey.
