Northern Territory Government’s $38 Million Gunn Point Road upgrade project will be officially open to the public from next week.

“Territory Government is focussed on creating jobs and not only did this project support 160 jobs during construction, the economic benefits from the commercial and tourism industries will be significant.” Minister for Infrastructure Planning and Logistics Eva Lawler said.

“New Gunn Point Road will provide Territorians with safe, year-round access to Gunn Point, natural resource extractive areas and key Northern Australia pastoral regions.”

This provides increased access and opportunity for the area’s tourism and commercial interests.

“It will also improve public access to many of the Territory’s popular recreation and tourist areas used for fishing, hunting, four-wheel-driving and camping.” Minister Lawler said.

Project supported 160 jobs throughout construction, with the final sealing of the 35-km stretch of Gunn Point Road and Murrumujuk Road delivered under budget, through partnerships with three local Northern Territory contractors.

Gunn Point Road is the main access to a number of popular recreational fishing destinations close to Darwin, Palmerston and surrounding suburbs including Leaders Creek, the Vernon Islands, Saltwater Arm and the lower Adelaide River.

Key works of the Gunn Point Upgrade Project include:

• Realigning Gunn Point Road to sit within the proper road reserve, resulting in a 4.8 km shorter journey for road users to Gunn Point
• Sealing the road beyond Murrumujuk Road, incorporating the intersection to Leaders Creek boat ramp access road turn-off
• Introduction of dedicated right and left turning lanes suitable for large vehicles and trailers at major intersections to improve safety
• Elevating the road to sit higher than surrounding land to improve flood immunity during the Wet Season.

Main sealing of the new Gunn Point Road is largely complete, while final works will continue at intersections and road side drainage.
