An expanded CCTV network is working to keep the community and businesses in Frankston’s busy city centre and Young Street transit hub safe, funded by an Andrews Government grant.
Minister for Police Lisa Neville and Member for Frankston Paul Edbrooke today unveiled the system, which includes:
- 15 new CCTV cameras,
- 10 new street lights,
- Upgraded fibre cabling to improve transmission to the Frankston Police Station.
“We’re proud to be investing in grassroots solutions to local crime issues, while also funding 3,135 new frontline Police, increasing Police capability and introducing stronger laws to help fight crime.” Minister for Police Lisa Neville said.
Footage from the cameras is transmitted back to the local Police station, where it is monitored across the day and night. The CCTV network are providing additional support to Police during real-time operations as well as support the prosecution of offenders.
Expanded CCTV Project aims to improve perceptions of safety and encourage increased community confidence and enjoyment of the Frankston CBD area.
$273,000 CCTV system upgrade was jointly funded with the Frankston City Council, with the State Government contributing almost $193,000 through its Public Safety Infrastructure Fund.
These grants invest up to $250,000 for infrastructure upgrades to encourage more people to use public spaces and reduce the opportunities for crime across Victoria. They’re part of the Government’s $25 Million investment into the Community Crime Prevention Program, aimed at tackling crime and its root causes in this year’s Budget.
“Upgraded CCTV network will help Police keep a close eye on the Frankston CBD and Young Street transit hub, making it a safer and more inviting space for the community.” Member for Frankston Paul Edbrooke said.
“This is an important upgrade for the CBD and feeds into our Government’s massive redevelopment of the area.”
Since July 2015, the State Government has provided almost $1.2 Million in funding for 11 community safety projects in the City of Frankston under its Community Crime Prevention Program.
Latest independent crime statistics showing a 14.8 % decrease in the crime rate in Frankston when compared to the previous 12-month period showing a difference is already being made.
This is in addition to the $63 Million investment in the redevelopment of the Frankston Station Precinct and the Young Street transit hub. Work is underway to transform the area into a safer, more modern and thriving community and public transport hub.
Project forms part of a further $25 Million for community crime prevention initiatives funded as part of this year’s budget. It includes CCTV and lighting for shopping precincts and places of mass gathering across Victoria.
