Edgy New Zoo Entrance And Some Snappy Arrivals

  • Perth Zoo entry receives $600,000 facelift – first in 40 years
  • Three American Alligators arrive at zoo

Environment Minister Bill Marmion has unveiled an edgy, new contemporary entrance for the Perth Zoo and welcomed three snappy new residents in time for Christmas and summer holidays visits.

Mr. Marmion said the opening of the new-look entrance and the arrival of three young male American Alligators signalled the start of the busy summer season at Perth Zoo.

“The new entry area features dramatic new shade structures, beautiful Australian-inspired gardens, improved signage and an upgraded ticketing office.” Mr. Marmion said.

“The modern shade structures include animal cut-outs and mirror the design of the zoo’s striking solar pergola.”

The Minister said the $600,000 main entry upgrade, funded by the State Government, was long overdue. The existing Perth Zoo entrance was built in 1970-71.

“This important venue has a statement entrance that reflects its status as a premier visitor and tourist destination.” Mr. Marmion said.

“As well as the new entrance, visitors can view the zoo’s three new American Alligators in their exhibit near the Sun Bears.”

“The alligators, on loan from Australia Zoo, are only about three years old and just 90cm long. A fully grown American Alligator can reach 4.5m and weigh up to 380kgs.”

Native to south-eastern USA, American Alligators live in freshwater swamps and marshes.
